Cybersecurity is the wall. Cyber resilience is what happens when the wall is gone.

For thirty years, technology was an industry. Code lived in containable places, defended by walls around discrete islands. That world is gone. There is no tech industry anymore. Every industry is a tech industry, every product is a software product, every system is woven into every other system through transitive dependencies that nobody fully maps.

The shift happened gradually enough that the mental model never updated. We are the frog in slowly heating water, still defending broken walls around islands that no longer exist.

The adversary is already in. The perimeter is a fiction. The question is no longer how to keep them out. The question is whether the system keeps working anyway.

This is the difference between robustness and resilience. Robustness is how much force a wall takes before it breaks. Resilience is how the system keeps doing its job while broken, recovers without ceremony, and learns from every hit. Robustness is a fortress. Resilience is an immune system.

Restaurants and festivals already understand this. A kitchen on a Saturday night is one mistake away from total disruption, every night, for hours. A festival main stage is one generator away from silence in front of fifty thousand people. The work behind the curtain is organised chaos. The measure of success is that the customer never sees the seams. The fryer dies, the dish still arrives. The cable fails, the show goes on. These industries solved resilience long before software discovered it had a problem, because they had no choice.

But live operations have a structural advantage software does not. They run in bounded sprints. Service ends, the doors close, the crew resets, the kitchen restocks, the lessons get debriefed, and the next night starts fresh. Recovery happens in the gap. The gap is real.

Cyber resilience has no gap. The system holds the line and resets and learns and improves, all while still serving. There is no closing time. There is no Sunday morning where the perimeter takes a day off.

The trade goes both ways. A restaurant cannot pause service to rehearse the kitchen failing. A festival cannot simulate a generator outage during the headliner's set. They learn from incidents that actually happened, and only those. Software can rehearse. Software can fail itself on purpose, in controlled conditions, repeatedly, and learn before the real incident arrives.

So the disciplines mirror each other on inverted constraints. Live operations have natural recovery windows but no rehearsal capacity. Software has no recovery windows but unlimited rehearsal capacity. The cybersecurity industry has wasted both. It treats incidents as exceptional, when live operations learned long ago that incidents are the curriculum. It does not rehearse, when rehearsal is the one thing software can do that nothing else can.

Resilience engineering is what you get when you take the operational maturity of industries that have always run hostile, and combine it with the rehearsal capacity that only software has. Neither discipline alone is enough. The combination is the discipline.
